I have heard there is another good source of funding for inventors: "aunt Ethel". What that means is a family member. There is frequently an aunt, uncle or other family member who has some money and has enough confidence in the inventor and the invention to actually invest.
You are absolutely right Norton. A family member could definitely be a valuable source of invention funding. I wish this had ever been the case for me, but I guess not this time around.
I have searched both high and low and to every resource available to get the funding I need to fund my invention I do know it will make mllions once it gets going but getting there well you have to fall into selling your soul I guess cause I have 9 inventions and yet none of them are worthy of a lone without giveing up 51% stock to the lender and even after the loan is paid you still have them sucking you dry from still owning 51%,and the SBA and all thier cohoarts and affiliates are even worse I wonder why I even dream this stuff up,by I did and maybe one day, someone will say ok but till then I remain working class poor am down to 3 fingers on one hand and one of them dont work but who cares as long as I can continue to kill myself for my kids welfair,WHERE CAN I GET THE 2.2 Mill. to begin a new life of makeing the rest of my inventions work?
ans.so far nowhere
Jerry,
I hate to break this to you brother, but there is absolutely no way anyone is going to loan an independent inventor 2.2 mil, I don't care what the invention is. Let's say it's the cure for cancer for instance, there's no money in that! No repeat sales, that's the way a potential investor sees it.
There are only a handful of people worldwide, compared to the rest of us that is, that can actually borrow that kind of money on a signature. Having said that, there are almost none of those people that would be willing to dump that much into an invention, ANY invention, regardless of it's merit.
I don't know if you are needing that kind of dough because the invention is that expensive to develop, or because you are planning a very large scale manufacturing outfit to produce it for that figure as well. I'll tell you though, if it was me, and it is as I'm in rather the same situation, I would go with something cheaper. That invention of yours will still be there, but perhaps you need to put it on the back burner and develop a cheaper one, a much cheaper one!
If it's that good, you should at least get it patented, which is considered to have "constructively" reduced it to practice, if it's that far along. A patent won't cost you nearly that much, even if you use the most expensive patent attorney in the country your not looking at more than $20,000 for a patent and that's way to much as well. The average patent attorney is able to get you a patent for around $5000 max for a pretty complex invention, as cheap as $2000 for something simple, or you can do it yourself for under a grand.
If you had a patent, you could market the licensing on the patent to companies who can afford that dollar figure to go forward with it, and receive a royalty for allowing them to do so. Stay away from the invention development firms as they only want to rip you off, and even if you did find a legitimate one, they aren't going to have millions of dollars to throw at ANY one thing.
This may sound hard to believe, but coming up with a new invention is the easy part! It's the rest of the process which often brings the inventor to his or her knees. The patenting, manufacturing, marketing and the entire lot of headaches that goes with each and every one of those steps.
In the last couple of weeks, I have seen countless "cheapo" inventions. The first one that comes to mind is a simple plastic slide clip that slips over a toothpaste container, allowing you to slide it up to squeeze the toothpaste out. Simple to prototype, simpler to patent, and a relatively easy sell to a manufacturer who already makes products within a similar market base. Think simple, and most importantly cheap!
If you have young kids, or kids at all for that matter as you said you do, financing is often very difficult to come by in any sense of the word. It's really tough to tell the kids they can't eat this month because dad is buying a patent! That's the exact same situation I'm in currently, and trying like hell to get out of.
It sounds like you could qualify for some financing, but try to keep that to a minimum as well. If you read the article above you can tell that I'm not a big fan of the Small Business Assassination either! They are there for what we independent inventors would consider to be big business, not small business. Again, they get around this term by calling us, micro business or the like. There is very little in the way of opportunities for the independent inventor as far as financing goes.
Again, if you can qualify for a small loan, keep it as small as possible. Consider what you will need to do to make the thing, think about getting a patent in there somewhere. If it's a small injection molded plastic product like the one I mentioned above for the toothpaste, you should talk to a local molder in your area, and find out what they will want to make you a mold, or molds for it. The parts are practically free with injection molded plastic, but the mold itself is expensive. Think about all these things as you go into it and try to figure out a minimum dollar figure for getting a simple invention off the ground. Don't sell it to short, because you don't want to find yourself %90 through with it, and unable to afford to go on. Now you have more bills and nothing to show for it but another kick in the teeth.
If you can obtain 10-20k worth of financing, you should be able to successfully launch just about any simple invention onto the market and see some profit from it, again and always depending upon complexity, but try to keep that to a minimum. If it's to complex, it's back to the drawing board. If you are worried about coming up with something else, spend more time thinking about it! The inventions will come to you, as I said coming up with something is the easy part, especially something simple.
Once you have the profit from a couple, even a few simpler inventions coming in, it will be much easier to obtain financing for a larger project, or even finance it youself. Think of it as a very annoying set of stairs that must be climbed, one at a time.
Last but not least, I am currently having funding difficulties of my own, as I have all my life. I certainly wasn't born with the silver spoon in hand as the old saying goes, and we are still fighting like hell to stretch a nickel until it squeaks. After creating my site, loneinventor.com (opens in a new window) and coming into contact with a plethora of inventors like myself, and you who are unable to find financing etc. I decided to create a manufacturing company that would be built on innovation, not opposed to it like so many large companies are. I would take inventor's like ourselves and produce thier invention, and give them a fair royalty, which is all most of us want anyway.
I therefore am about ready to file a corporation which will be able to obtain financing on it's own. I am waiting for the ability to finance that filing, around $125 which I should have any day now. At that point I will begin to build the credit of this corporation, and obtain financing. Within this year I hope to be able to begin producing inventions of other independent inventors like yourself. I doubt (okay, I'm certain I won't...)I will initially have millions of dollars to throw at any one project, however by this time next year that could be a whole different story. Long story short, I am working on that, and have been for quite some time and it's about to come to fruition.
Now don't let that stop you from trying on your own though! Continue to believe in yourself, and more importantly your inventions, dedicating every spare moment of time you have to their development, and the rest will eventually fall into place. Trust me I know that's not an easy answer to swallow, I know personally. I have fought looking for financing for literal years for a variety of projects, and finally got tired of the run around. I got tired of asking others for approval, when I was all the approval I needed anyway. Anyway, please don't give up hope, and more importantly, don't give up the fight!
Please visit the main site, and sign up for a free user account. We have forums, chat etc. all designed to be resources for the independent inventor. I have also conducted several interviews, InventorViews I call them with people just like you and me who have been there and done that, and they can be very encouraging. My interview with Heather Allard, inventor of the swaddleaze is posted here in the blog as well, definitely encouraging to the independent inventor.
I really hope some of that helps you out my friend. It seems pretty bleak right now, but hey, no where to go but up, right?
You can contact me anytime at one@loneinventor.com that's also my MSNIM address if you want to chat with me on there as well. I wish you the best of luck, and please keep in touch. I will have that deal off the ground in no time, and in the mean time perhaps I can give you some links to resources, information or something else you might need which I might have.
Good luck brother, keep the faith!

How can iventors gain funding for they ideas and thiers no such thing as protecting ideas i seen it too many time the same idea or better its better to concept somthing very different thats what i do .
I was very interested reading your entry. You are absolutely right about the SBIR grants offered by the government. It is a well known fact that a lot of proposals are turned down simply because they were not prepared right.
But what I liked most about your entry was the part about investing in yourself. There used to be a program (I don't know that its still on) about inventors trying to get their inventions sold. Some were successful and some weren't. You will never know until you try.
Hi Rose, and thanks for the kind comments! I truly appreciate them. I do wish that there were more avenues for the micro business out there, but perhaps in time that will all into place. Any time would be good however as the economy could always be better, and micro to small business is such a large part of the whole economic picture.
Thanks again,
Steve
Curious: I'm not sure if you know this, or how to even find out but what are the rules of ethics, etc. regarding raffle's? I have an invention that I am unable to afford even a Provisional Patent for and the total cost for a working prototype wil be upwards of 100K. My plan is to then sell to a major manufacturer of Baby products. I would like to know if a raffle could be set up for funding of an invention for part ownership/percentage and or royalties of the product.
Thank you,
Colleen
Hi Colleen, and sorry or the very long wait on a reply, over a year now apparently? Sheesh, this has really gotten away from me, and I apologize for that.
As for the raffles, I don't see why not. You will have to check with the legality in your local area of course, as because raffles are indeed a form of gambling there may be special restrictions on doing such.
I think it's a great idea though! An inventor's raffle... Sort of makes the mind wander into the possibilities for a few moments. I think it could be a great thing however.
About your working prototype, does it require 100 grand worth of investment to make it work, or is that a "nice to have" but not a necessity? You can accomplish a heck of a lot for 100k as I'm sure you well know. If indeed your invention is complex enough to require that type of capitol investment, might I suggest something simpler (read cheaper;)) first? Then you could use the revenue from the cheaper project to go onto the next one and so forth?
Another thing to consider is that a major manufacturer of baby products is very likely to have their own "in house" design, engineering, and prototype teams and facilities. What I mean by that is, if they do decide to license or buy it from you, they will most likely change it to at least some degree but perhaps entirely. This would mean that the 100k up front cost isn't really needed to come out of your pocket. Sometimes even a model will work or companies like this, of course that depends upon the company you are targeting as well.
Anyway, a great idea you have there and I hope it turns out well for you. Best of luck with your inventive efforts Colleen, and again very sorry for the wait on response.
Have a great day,
Steve

my husband has so many great ideas and inventions but,we have very little money to get it to market,or just help us it on .we own our own house and raising a 14 year and hoping to put him through cllege. my husband is self employed, like to sell one of his ideas to have money to retire on. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP US!!!!
Hello Anne,
Your situation is far to familiar, and there are countless inventors around the globe in the same or very similar circumstances. My suggestion to you would be, pick one and go for it! Very little money can and will bring a product to the market. You will likely be doing everything yourselves, but that's why a small amount of money can work. It's sort of like sweat equity in the invention investment.
Pick something small and simple, and bring it to the next stage of development. When it's ready, sell the darn thing however you can. License it to a company who will produce it for you, or contract with a manufacture who will make it that has existing distribution channels they would be willing to push it through for you, or take them around to your local stores and get then to put a few on the shelves. Grass roots marketing works, and it's cheap.
You should stop by over on the main site, www.loneinventor.com and have a look around. There you will find the inventor's forums, inventor's podcasts, chat room, private messaging system and an ever growing inventor's community. You will have the support you need to follow through with your dreams and make them reality.
I hope that helps Anne. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail if I can answer any questions for you or be of any further assistance. I wish you and your husband the best of luck with your inventive endeavors.
Steve
I've read the other posted comments and is very pleased with your response to each question. So I have a question and information regarding my invention. I actually, have a patent pending product that I researched and submitted almost a year ago, the application was on the government patent site. I developed a baby product that is consumer efficent and would definitely help young mothers everywhere. After I applied received my patent pending information I met with a plastic company in my area that agreed to assist me with building my injection mold for approximately $20.000. I already have a prototype made and Autocad designs as well. The plastic company will also help me with the packaging so my problem is getting the $20.000 for the injection mold. The plastic company would also make the plastic products for me as well. I was very fortunate to find all I needed within my city from the yellow pages. i hope I have helped someone else as well with the information. The plastic company is reasonable and is B-side Plastics.
Thanks for the independent advice, it's nice to know that I'm not the first inventor to suffer through this process, nor will I be the last
.
My husband has a utility patent which was issued in 2000. We have
no money but apparantly a great idea. A Research and development
company wants $50K for making prototypes (l00) ucl testing research
etc. We had to decline. A months passes and they offer to do
this work for a piece of the patent and way they will find venture captial if we like. This company check outs (its not one of those
promotional companies) They are listed on Thomas register and
we are getting references etc. But is this a good idea? like i say
we are strapped for cash. Its a utilitly patent for plumbing and
should be worth a lot. buy then again i'm prejudice. Any advice
I would also like to know if a raffle could be set up for funding of an invention for part ownership/percentage and or royalties of the product.
